One of the main buildings in Ashbury is the manor, now a farm in private ownership, dates from the 15th century. The church, which has is a good state of repair, has work from many periods. The south door is decorated with chevrons which are Norman and the nave arcades are Perpendicular in design.
Ashdown House which is set in a valley among beautiful gardens is to be found only two miles away and looks just like a square little dolls house with four avenues leading directly from the house to the north south east and west.
The architect was probably William Winde, who also built the original house at Cliveden. The house was designed for Lord Craven, a lifelong admirer of Elizabeth of Bohemia, Charles the first sister. He not only dedicated the house to her even though she never visited it but also sent £30,000 to her son Prince Rupert to equip an army to fight for her husband’s throne, when she died she left him her pictures and papers of interest.
Standing three stories high and crowned by a golden cupola, the house dates from 1665 and now together with about 40 acres belongs to the National Trust, It is open to the public at certain times, and inside, the remarkable staircase takes up a quarter of the interior.
Alfred’s Castle is to be found on Swinley Down to the west of Ashdown Woods. Here you will find a very small earthwork which is inside a larger one. remains have been found here of Iron Age Romano British and Anglo Saxon remains, but the camp probably has nothing to do with Alfred though he did fight and win a battle in 871 against the Danes somewhere around the downs. also in the area are the remains of a Romano British settlement, and traces of Celtic fields, and since the area is near Wiltshire, sarsen stones also to be found in the area.

Along with the hamlets of Idstone, Kingstone, and Winslow, the village of Ashbury serves as the primary settlement located approximately 11 kilometres east of Swindon.
